Birdman Cinema in the Highest
According to legendary filmmaker Jean Luc Godard, quoted by Toby Mussman: “There are two kinds of cinema; there is Flaherty and there is Eisenstein. That is to say, there is documentary realism and there is theatre, but ultimately, at the highest level, they are one and the same. What I mean is that through documentary one arrives at the structure of the theatre, and through theatrical imagination and fiction one arrives at the reality of life.”

Gone Girl Divided
Take Scott Peterson and Casey Anthony, whip them together in the prose of Gillian Flynn, then strain through the mainstream grit of director David Fincher and you get—Gone Girl. The film has already stirred a storm of controversy, especially claims of the film’s misogyny. I won’t necessarily assume that you have heard the spoilers behind the outrage, but perhaps you have at least heard that some people are mad—and with good reason.
In some ways, this response is a fine reflection of one of the film’s key themes: hysteria and mob mentalities conjured by sensational media. Flynn’s original novel did not receive the same sort of outrage perhaps because the quiet subtlety of a novel allows people more time to reflect and fully examine the characters. The audience for long-fiction might also be more inclined toward critical analysis than your average moviegoer, looking for a two-hour thrill. Scarlett Johansson is having a big year, appearing in several big budget features (Her, Under the Skin). Luc Besson is consistently a commercial success with a range of films, from gritty violent fare (The Taken and Transporter series), to simmering and suspenseful action (The Professional, Nikita) to his space opera spectacle The Fifth Element. Lucy, starring ScarJo, is definitely of the first category. It is already cleaning up at the box office, but the film itself is a bit of a mess, thanks in part to a flawed central premise.
We in Seattle are frequently made conscious of the abundance and grandeur of the ocean. We can go whale watching in the San Juan Islands, witness salmon runs in Ballard Locks and fishmongers throwing the day’s catch in Pike Place Market, identify with the iconic ferry system and often get held up by sailboats at the Fremont drawbridge. Our connection to the ocean is one of the main reasons people flock to Seattle, why we have the most boats per capita of any US city.
In Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now (1979), Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) is tasked to find and kill Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando) who has gone AWOL by defining himself as a demigod to a small village deep in the Vietnamese jungle. Kurtz insults the military in a dialog with Willard, “Are you an assassin?” Willard replies, “I am a soldier” to which Kurtz rejoins, “You are neither. You are an errand boy. Sent by grocery trucks to collect a bill.”
Coppola painted an infamously vivid picture of war as a personal hell, the full force of “the [existential] horror,” all of which reflected the sentiment that many held about the Vietnam War—that it was a human and national disaster. The message Coppola is sending is clear, and whether you agree with it or not, at least the filmmaker is honest.

I assisted in production work to convert a print booklet to an online supplement which showed off the features and functionality of Microsoft One Note. My task was to use photos and text provided in a pdf and create a One Note document that demonstrators could use to show the awesome qualities of the program.
